Identity development - Edith Piaf- based on the movie La Vie En Rose - Essay Example It is not difficult to comprehend why Piaf suffered so much as an adult, when understanding the loneliness and neglect that she suffered as a child. Edith began her life in Paris but eventually made her way to New York shortly after being accused of the murder of the man who discovered her singing talents. Edith Piaf was indeed fortunate to have an amazing ability to sing and perform, but yet she suffered deeply with issues of inadequacy and abandonment. She fell in love with a married man who was eventually killed in a plane crash. The end period of Piafââ¬â¢s life was plagued by an addiction to morphine and a series of promiscuous relationships meant to fill the void left within her from her life of tragedy and sorrow. According to the theory of development stated by Freud, there are three components of personality. The Id, the ego and the superego. Freud believed the Id to be a naturally occurring and primal part of the personality which had no real connection to the real world. The ego however could be shaped by outside experiences during development. When applying the life experiences of Piaf to her developmental becoming, it is clear that she was a product of multiple stressors and disappointments. Freud described the ego and the Id as being void of conscience or morality. The superego however was described as the core of oneââ¬â¢s conscience. This sense of right and wrong could easily be instilled or manipulated by developmental experiences. Obviously, the sense of right and wrong instilled in Piaf was rather shaky as she quickly justified abandoning her own child just as she herself was abandoned. She had no sense of family or commitment and therefore found an affair with a married father of three to be justifiable as well. Piaf was not shown a strong sense of value or family connection at any point in her life. She was raised eventually by a grandmother who was a prostitute, justifying promiscuous and
